Serpent's Purse of Plenty

The Grimorium Verum, the eighteenth-century French grimoire of practical folk sorcery, preserves one of the strangest and most beloved money-charms of the European occult underground: bury a length of mare's hair in an earthenware pot of spring water for nine days, and from it a small serpent-like familiar is said to hatch — a creature that, if fed on wheat husks and bran and kept in a little box with a coin, will multiply that coin overnight. Cunning folk across the centuries whispered of tending these tiny household guardians the way one might tend a hearth fire: quietly, faithfully, and never boastfully.

This working keeps the bones of that old charm while releasing it from any real creature. In place of mare's hair, a coiled cord of natural jute or flax is buried and consecrated as the vessel of a purely symbolic guardian spirit — an imagined presence of coiled potential rather than a literal animal to capture or keep. The nine-day burial period still matters; it is the incubation the original charm insisted upon, the slow dark patience abundance magic so often requires.

Once unearthed, the cord is placed in a small box alongside a seed coin and a pinch of bran as a symbolic offering, and the practitioner visits it regularly — not to watch coins literally multiply, but to reinforce, through ritual repetition, the felt sense of ongoing increase. It is folk magic in its most literal sense: small, domestic, and patient.
