The Salt Line Exile
A foundational witchcraft banishing that traps an unwanted presence within a poured salt boundary and marches it out through a single open threshold.
Ritual Overview
Long before formal ceremonial banishings existed, cunning folk understood that intrusive presences — whether a lingering bad mood, a nosy spirit, or an ex-lover's psychic residue — could be walked out a door as surely as a physical guest. The Salt Line Exile treats the home as a body: it has one mouth, and everything unwanted leaves through it.
The caster pours a continuous line of salt from the center of the affected room outward to the threshold, narrating the unwanted energy's journey aloud as they go. Unlike wards that seal a space shut, this working is intentionally directional and temporary — it opens exactly long enough to let something out, then closes behind it.
Because it uses no invoked entities and only kitchen-cupboard materials, this is often the first banishing a solitary witch learns, and remains useful as a monthly maintenance rite even for practitioners who have moved on to heavier ceremonial work.
Ritual Steps
Name the Room's Mouth
Identify the single door the energy will exit through and prop it open before beginning.
2 minutes
Light the Threshold Candle
Place the white candle just outside the propped door, lit, so its flame marks the exit point.
3 minutes
Visualization
A small steady flame standing guard at the room's only mouth.
Pour the Exile Line
Starting at the room's center, slowly pour a continuous salt line straight to the threshold, speaking the unwanted presence's expulsion aloud as you walk.
5 minutes
Visualization
A pale, unbroken road forming beneath your feet, pointing only one way — out.
Sweep Behind the Line
Using the dedicated broom, sweep from the center toward the door along the salt path, physically herding the residue forward.
5 minutes
Close the Mouth
Once the sweeping reaches the threshold, snuff the candle, shut the door firmly, and sweep the salt off the step into the outside world.
5 minutes
Visualization
The doorway sealing shut like a mouth closing after speaking its last word.
