Hermetic practitioners have long held that any sufficiently loved book becomes charged with the reader's own associative web, so the "randomness" of the fall is only random to the conscious mind.

This working asks the practitioner to choose a book that already carries personal weight, consecrate the threshold with fire and air, and pose a question with genuine stakes before letting the book fall open. The line the eye meets first, not the tenth line skimmed while searching for a better answer, is the reading.

The practice is deliberately humble in its materials and deliberately strict in its discipline: one question, one fall, one line, recorded without editing.
