Ritual Overview
The Headless Rite, also known as the Bornless Ritual or the Preliminary Invocation of the Goetia, is one of the most potent and ancient rituals in the Western occult tradition. Its origins lie in the Greek Magical Papyri, where it was used for liberation from fate and communion with the divine. In the Goetia, it is adapted as the preliminary invocation that establishes the magician's authority over spirits, including the spirits of the dead.
The ritual calls upon the practitioner's own divine and eternal nature — the "Bornless" aspect that existed before birth and will exist after death. By identifying with this transcendent self, the practitioner becomes a being of authority who can command spirits without fear. The invocation consists of a series of powerful declarations of identity, each asserting the practitioner's unity with the highest divine principles.
In necromantic practice, the Headless Rite is used to safely open communication with the deceased. The practitioner, established in their bornless identity, is immune to the influences of the underworld and can enter into conversation with ancestral spirits, guides, and the recently departed with perfect safety. The ritual is particularly effective when performed at a gravesite or during the dark moon, when the veil between worlds is at its thinnest.
Ritual Steps
Opening the Temple
Cast the circle as in the LBRP. Place the bowl of earth to the north (representing the underworld) and the bowl of water to the west (representing the boundary of death). Light myrrh incense.

The circle glows with pale blue light, and the north and west bowls become pools of reflective darkness connecting to the underworld.
The Bornless Declaration
Stand facing east and declare: "Heaven is my Father. The AEther is my God. The Earth is my Body. The Wind is my Soul. I am the Bornless Spirit, existing before the foundation of the Earth." Vibrate each statement with full authority.

Your physical form becomes translucent, and within it shines a form of pure light — your bornless self, ageless and eternal.
Invocation of the Bornless One
Recite the full Bornless Invocation from the Greek Magical Papyri: "I call upon thee, the Headless One, that didst create the Earth and the Heavens, that didst separate the Light from the Darkness..." Continue through all the names and powers.

A vast, formless presence descends into the circle — not a being but the source of all being. It fills the space and you expand to contain it.
Opening the Gate of the Dead
Face north and trace the symbol of the descending spiral with the wand. Say: "I who am Bornless call upon the dead. By my authority, I open the gate. Let those who have passed speak through this gate." Ring the bell seven times.

The bowl of earth in the north begins to glow with a deep, dark light. A mist rises from it, and within the mist, faces and forms begin to appear.
Communication and Closing
Speak with the spirits who appear, asking your questions or delivering your message. When finished, thank them and command: "Return now to your rest. The gate is closed." Reverse the spiral and ring the bell once. Close the circle.

The spirits bow and dissolve back into the mist, which sinks into the bowl of earth. The spiral seals with a flash of blue light, and the underworld gate closes.
