Pentacle of Mercury: Key of Closed Doors

The 5th Pentacle of Mercury sits among the planetary seals of Book I of the Key of Solomon (Clavicula Salomonis), and its documented function is refreshingly literal: Mathers' translation records that it serves 'to open doors in whatever way they may be closed,' a virtue historically applied to actual locked doors and barred passages during operative work. The pentacle's effect, however, does not require the door to be made of wood and iron.

This working extends the pentacle's stated function to the closed doors of ordinary life — the application that has gone unanswered, the negotiation that has stalled, the path forward that seems, for reasons unclear, simply shut. Mercury governs communication, movement, and the crossing of thresholds, so a Mercury pentacle built for literal doors translates cleanly onto the figurative ones that block opportunity and progress.
