Middle Pillar Exercise
The foundational Qabalistic exercise that builds the body of light by circulating divine energy through the central axis of the Tree of Life.
Ritual Overview
The Middle Pillar Exercise is the central practice of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn's system of magick — a meditation and energy-working that builds what is called the "Body of Light," the subtle energetic vehicle through which all magical operations are conducted. The exercise circulates divine light through the five spheres on the central axis of the Tree of Life, from Kether at the crown to Malkuth at the feet.
The practitioner visualizes spheres of light at each of the five centers: Kether (above the crown, brilliant white), Da'ath (at the throat, grey-violet), Tiphareth (at the heart, golden), Yesod (at the genitals, silver-violet), and Malkuth (at the feet, citrine-olive-russet-black). Each sphere is "vibrated" with the corresponding divine name, causing it to glow and pulse with increasing intensity.
As the light descends and ascends through the Middle Pillar, the practitioner feels a current of energy running through their entire being — a column of light that strengthens, purifies, and balances every aspect of their existence. Regular practice of the Middle Pillar leads to increased vitality, mental clarity, spiritual awareness, and the ability to perform high-level ceremonial magic. It is the single most important daily practice for any serious ceremonial magician.
Ritual Steps
Establish the Pillar
Stand with feet together, spine straight, arms at sides. Close your eyes and visualize a column of white light extending from infinity above your head, down through your body, into infinity below your feet. This is the Middle Pillar, the central axis of your being.

Visualization
A pillar of brilliant white light extends through your body from the infinite above to the infinite below. You are the center of the universe, connecting the worlds.
Intone Kether (Above Crown)
Visualize a sphere of pure white light about 6 inches above your head. Vibrate the name "EHEIEH" (Eh-heh-yeh). Feel the sphere expand and pulse with brilliant white radiance. It is the source from which all other light flows.

A sphere of blinding white light above your head, brighter than a thousand suns but gentle. It pulses with the rhythm of your heart.
Intone Da'ath (Throat)
Visualize a sphere of grey-violet light at the level of your throat. Vibrate the name "YHVH ELOHIM" (Yah-weh El-o-heem). Feel the sphere activate your power of manifestation and speech.

A sphere of swirling grey-violet at your throat, like a nebula of light and shadow. It pulses, sending tendrils of light up to Kether and down to Tiphareth.
Intone Tiphareth (Heart)
Visualize a sphere of golden light at your heart center. Vibrate the name "YHVH ELOAH VA-DA'AT" (Yah-weh El-o-ah Va-da-att). This is the central sun of your being, the harmonizing force of the entire pillar.

A golden sun blazing at your heart, radiating warmth through your entire body. All other spheres are illuminated by this central radiance.
Intone Yesod and Malkuth (Lower Centers)
Visualize a sphere of silver-violet at the genitals (Yesod) and a sphere of earth tones — citrine, olive, russet, black — at your feet (Malkuth). Vibrate "SHADDAI EL CHAI" (Shah-dye El Chai) for Yesod and "ADONAI HA-ARETZ" (Ad-o-nai Ha-aretz) for Malkuth. Feel the light circulate: descend from Kether to Malkuth, then rise back up.

Visualization
Light flows down the pillar like a waterfall: white to grey-violet to gold to silver-violet to earth. Then it rises back up, charging each sphere brighter with each cycle.
Warnings & Ethics
The Middle Pillar is a powerful energy practice. If you feel dizzy or over-energized, ground by visualizing the excess energy flowing out through your feet into the earth.
