The Greater Curse: An Escalation Working

The Ars Goetia does not assume its first invocation will always succeed. Immediately after "The Invocation," the Lesser Key of Solomon supplies two escalating fallback texts, the General Curse and the Greater Curse, to be used if the called spirit is slow or refuses to appear. These invoke a heavier register of names — Jehovah, Tetragrammaton, Anaphaxeton, and Primeumaton — and threaten confinement of the recalcitrant spirit "into the depth of the Bottomless Abyss, or Great Lake of Fire... to remain in torments unspeakable, in chains, and in fire and brimstone unquenchable, unless thou forthwith appear." The register shifts from formal command to explicit threat: the text is designed to be read only when patience has already been tried and failed.

Reframed for modern solitary practice, the Greater Curse is not a first resort — it is what you reach for when a first, measured attempt to banish or release something (a compulsive habit, an intrusive thought pattern, a lingering unwanted attachment) has not taken. Where an ordinary banishing asks a thing to leave, this working forces the issue: it names the cost of continued resistance in stark terms and insists on immediate compliance. The escalation is deliberate and should be felt as a last resort, not a habit — repeatedly forcing an issue rather than addressing its root tends to produce brittle, temporary results rather than lasting change.
