Triangle of Art: The Containment Working

In the Ars Goetia, part of the Lesser Key of Solomon, the Triangle of Art (also called the Triangle of Solomon) is the second essential structure of any working, complementing the protective circle. Drawn on the ground roughly two feet outside the circle's edge, the triangle measures about three feet along each side, its base set nearest the circle and its apex pointing outward and away from the operator. The outline is traditionally drawn in black, with a smaller circle inscribed within it in dark green. At the triangle's three points, the Goetia instructs the names MICHAEL — the archangel of severity and command — and the divine names ANAPHAXETON and PRIMEUMATON, both drawn from the Key's wider vocabulary of power. Whatever is called in the working is commanded to appear and remain within this triangle and nowhere else; it is the fixed point of engagement, entirely separate from the operator's own protected ground.

The genius of the design is spatial: the operator never has to meet what is summoned on equal footing. There is always a boundary between them, and the thing summoned is always the one confined, never the one setting the terms.

Adapted for solitary modern practice, the Triangle of Art becomes a technique for examining anything too volatile to hold at arm's length — a flare of rage, an old shame, a persistent craving, a toxic relational pattern you keep circling back into. Rather than suppressing it or letting it flood you, you give it a designated place just outside your own protected space, name it clearly, and look at it from safety. The triangle does the psychological work a circle alone cannot: it externalizes the difficult thing without pretending it does not exist.
