A reversal curse that uses black thorns to pierce and disable the energy of an enemy, turning their own malicious intent back upon them with the sharp sting of consequence.
Ritual Overview
The Black Thorn Reversal is a folk magick curse rooted in the hedge-witch traditions of the British Isles. It uses the blackthorn — a plant sacred to the dark goddess and the waning year — as the instrument of reversal. The blackthorn's sharp, unforgiving spines are nature's own needles, perfect for piercing energetic cords that bind the practitioner to their enemy and sending the enemy's own poison back through those same cords.
The working begins with the collection of nine blackthorn spines, each one blessed and cursed simultaneously — blessed to protect the practitioner, cursed to return harm to the source of malice. The practitioner creates a poppet or names a black candle to represent the target, then methodically inserts each thorn into the representation while reciting the specific harm that is being returned.
What differentiates this working from a simple cursing is its precise targeting: only the specific harm that the target has already sent is returned. If the target has sent harm through gossip, gossip returns to them. If they have sent harm through energetic attack, that attack rebounds. The Black Thorn Reversal does not create new harm — it sends the existing harm back along the same path it traveled, like a needle threaded with the target's own dark energy.
Ritual Steps
Carve the Target Candle
Carve the target's name and a symbol of their harmful act into the black candle. If you prefer not to use their real name, use a descriptive epithet: "The one who slanders," "The one who steals." Anoint the candle with graveyard dirt mixed with a drop of your own blood (or saliva if blood is too extreme).

As you carve, the candle takes on the energetic signature of the target. The wax seems to darken slightly as the sympathetic link is established.
Thread the First Thorn
Take the first thorn and hold its point in the candle flame for a moment. Say: "This thorn carries no malice of mine. It carries only your own returning." Push the thorn into the candle at the base while saying: "As you have pierced me, so I pierce you — with your own thorn."

As the thorn enters the candle, a thin black thread of energy snaps into view — the cord of harm that the target sent to you. It now reverses direction, traveling back along the same cord.
Thread All Nine Thorns
Repeat the process for all nine thorns, placing them at intervals along the candle from base to top. Each thorn corresponds to a specific harm or a specific instance of malicious intent. Speak each one clearly.

Each thorn severs another cord of attachment between you and the target, and each cord snaps back toward the target with a crack of dark energy.
The Reversal Declaration
Wrap the black thread around the candle seven times, binding the thorns in place. Say: "I do not curse you. I return to you what you have sent. The blackthorn knows its own. The wound you made is now yours. This is the reversal of the Black Thorn."

The black thread glows with dark light as it tightens, and a pulse of energy travels from the candle, through the sympathetic link, directly to the target.
Burn and Bury
Light the candle and let it burn completely in the cauldron or fireproof dish. The thorns will remain in the melted wax. When cool, gather the wax and thorns and bury them at a crossroads or at the base of a blackthorn bush (if available).

As the candle burns, the reversed energy is released. The thorns in the melting wax seem to writhe as the target's own malice is consumed by fire. When buried, the earth seals the reversal.
Warnings & Ethics
This curse only reverses existing harm — it does not create new harm. If you use it against someone who has not actually harmed you, the reversal principle will target you instead. Be certain of your cause.
