The Severance Knot
A boundary-setting cord working that formally severs an unhealthy tie to a specific person and returns their own pressure to them without the caster reaching outward.
Ritual Overview
The Severance Knot belongs to the old family of cord and cord-cutting magic, but it is built specifically for situations where a relationship has curdled into ongoing pressure, manipulation, or harassment and ordinary boundary-setting has already failed. It does not wish harm on anyone; it simply stops acting as a conduit for someone else's behavior, and lets whatever they have been sending travel back along the line they built.
Two cords are used: a black one representing the tie itself, knotted nine times while the practitioner names, specifically and honestly, what the tie has cost them, and a red one representing the practitioner's own boundary, tied once, firmly, at the end. Cutting the black cord is the operative moment of the spell — not a symbolic snip but a deliberate, single stroke that is not repeated or second-guessed.
Because this working targets a real, named individual, it carries more responsibility than most protection spells. It is built for defense and closure, not as a tool to punish someone for a slight, and practitioners are asked to be scrupulously honest with themselves about which of those two things they are actually doing before they light the candle.
Ritual Steps
Name the Cost
Light the black candle and hold the black cord, speaking aloud each specific harm the tie to this person has caused you.
10 minutes
Visualization
Each spoken harm sinking into the cord as a small, visible knot.
Tie the Nine Knots
Tie nine knots along the black cord, one for each harm named or repeated until nine are tied, drawing each one tight.
15 minutes
Sever the Cord
In a single deliberate stroke, cut the black cord in half. Do not saw at it or hesitate partway through.
5 minutes
Visualization
The tie splitting cleanly, the two halves suddenly inert, no longer humming with old tension.
Burn the Photograph or Name
Burn the photograph or written name in the fireproof dish, letting it fall to ash completely.
10 minutes
Tie Your Boundary
Tie a single firm knot in the red cord and speak your new boundary aloud as a plain statement, not a wish or a hope.
10 minutes
Close the Working
Bury the cut black cord and the ash outside your home, and keep the red cord somewhere you will see it daily.
10 minutes
Warnings & Ethics
This working is meant for defense and closure against a specific, ongoing harm you can honestly name, not as a tool to punish someone for a minor slight or out of anger alone. Be certain of your motive before you cut the cord, and be prepared to actually enforce the boundary you tie afterward — the magic supports your resolve, it does not replace it.
